On the grounds of Dulles International Airport
in Northern Virginia

Two WW2 warbirds hang suspended, waiting for the protective plastic to be removed when the Udvar-Hazy Center opens it doors for visitors.
One day in the near future, in what is now a cavernous void within a hangar under construction at the Dulles International Airport, millions of visitors will be able to view some of the largest exhibits owned by the Smithsonian Institute's National Air and Space Museum. Starting around December 2003, visitors to the Herndon-Dulles area will be able to see many famous aircraft and spacecraft restored to their prime condition.

When open to the public, the planned exhibits include:

  • Space shuttle orbiter Enterprise
  • SR-71 Blackbird
  • B29 Enola Gay
  • Super-Sonic Transport Concorde
For museum information about which exhibits are going to be available when you plan your trip, see the museum website.
For information about local hotels, restaurants, and attractions, see the Herndon-Dulles visitor website.
In its pre-opening condition, what will be the main exhibit hall resembles a mammoth cavern. Planes and gliders suspended from the ceiling look like birds flying in the distance. Everything is counting down to the opening in December 2003.
